The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) left interest rates unchanged at 1.50% in line with consensus expectations. Notable callouts include the focus on maintaining the RBA forecasts for growth and inflation at above 3 per cent and above 2 per cent for 2018 respectively. Drivers of still low inflation growth that were highlighted include the competitive retail landscape with food and consumer goods prices falling year on year while the RBA drew comfort from leading economic indicators that, in their eyes, point towards some lift in wages growth this year that should feed into economic demand.

Steel increase

Notable releases last week included the Dec-17 figures for private sector capital spending and private sector lending figures. The market consensus forecast of 1% growth was disappointed with capital spending declining 0.2% in the December quarter as the upswing in non-mining investment struggles to eventuate.

Strong results

The Australian stock market recovered last week from a very volatile past couple of weeks as US markets come to grips with potentially higher inflation and higher rates quicker than previously expected. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index gained 1.3% for the week still well below the magic 6000 points and despite a relatively solid week.
